Kolymvari - Afrata beach

Kolymvari - Afrata beach,
West Crete

08-02-2026

The journey from Kolymbari to Afrata beach is a short but cinematic transition from the open coastline into the rugged, vertical soul of the Rodopos Peninsula. It is less about high speeds and more about the "lean" and the landscape.

1. The Ascent from Kolymbari
The route begins by leaving the sea-level flats of Kolymbari behind. As you head north, the road immediately begins to climb. To your right, you’ll pass the historic Gonia Odigitria Monastery, its stone walls overlooking the Gulf of Chania. This section is paved in asphalt, but it’s seasoned—expect some patches where the sea salt and sun have smoothed the surface.

2. The Ridge and the Village
As you gain elevation, the view opens up spectacularly. Looking back over your shoulder (or in your mirrors), the entire Chania coastline stretches out toward the east. The road here is a series of sweeping curves that lead you into Afrata village. This is a traditional Cretan settlement where the road narrows significantly; you’ll likely need to navigate around a parked pickup truck or a stray goat, so keep your speed low and your eyes up.

3. The Gorge Descent (The Highlight)
Once you pass through the village, the character of the ride shifts. You enter a narrow gorge that serves as the gateway to the beach.

The Terrain:
The road snakes downward with tighter, more technical hairpins. On a motorcycle, it’s a rhythmic descent through high limestone walls.

The Scenery:
The lush greenery of the village gives way to "wild beauty"—sharp rocks, low-lying Mediterranean scrub, and the scent of wild thyme.

The Reveal:
The best moment of the ride is the final approach. As you round the last bend of the gorge, the canyon walls "frame" the turquoise bay of Afrata. The contrast between the grey rock and the sudden pop of blue water is stunning.

Rider’s Notes
Road Width: Narrow. In many spots, two cars cannot pass comfortably; motorcycles have the advantage here.
Surface: Asphalt throughout, but watch for loose gravel ("haliki") in the corners near the gorge.
Difficulty: Moderate. The hairpins require focus, especially if you are distracted by the view.
Caution: The road is a favorite for local hikers and the occasional goat herd. Take the corners wide and stay alert for oncoming traffic that might take up more than their half of the lane.
