Ilingas, Beach,
West Crete

Ilingas Beach
Situated just 1 kilometer west of Chora Sfakion, Ilingas is a striking coastal haven tucked right at the mouth of the steep Kavi Gorge. Framed by soaring vertical limestone cliffs, it offers a dramatic and secluded atmosphere despite being moments away from the regional hub.

The Landscape & Microclimate:
The beach consists of fine gray pebbles and exceptionally clear, deep turquoise waters. What truly sets Ilingas apart is its natural shelter: while the fierce Meltemi and southerly winds frequently whip up large waves across the southern coast, this cove is uniquely protected by its towering cliff walls, making it a rare sanctuary of calm sea when nearby beaches are wind-swept.

The Caves & Hidden Coves:
Along the base of the eastern cliffs, natural sea caves carved into the rock provide generous, welcome shade throughout the hottest hours of the day. For adventurous swimmers or kayakers, a second, even more secluded beach (Lower Ilingas) lies just past the rocky headland to the west, reachable only by water.

Rider’s/Explorer's Notes:
The Access: Exceptionally easy. A short, paved road branches off the main route leading out of Chora Sfakion toward Anopolis, descending directly down to a parking area near the small local tavern right above the beach.
