Frangokastello Beach
Sprawling directly beneath the imposing stone walls of the Venetian fortress, Frangokastello beach is one of the most picturesque and accessible coastal spots along the southern shore of Sfakia.

The Landscape:
The main beach right in front of the castle features soft, golden sand and remarkably shallow, crystal-clear turquoise waters. Because the sea stays shallow for dozens of meters out, it warms up comfortably under the Mediterranean sun and provides a very gentle, calm environment compared to the typically deep drop-offs found elsewhere along Crete's south coast.

The Experience:
Swimming here offers the unique perspective of looking back at the battlements and corner towers of the 14th-century fortress framed against the dramatic backdrop of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori). Just a short walk to the east lies the more wild, wind-swept sand dunes of Orthi Ammos, offering a starker, unorganized beach landscape for those seeking a quieter spot.

Rider’s/Explorer's Notes:
The Access: Extremely straightforward. Smooth asphalt leads directly down to the coast with ample parking space right by the beach and fortress. It serves as an ideal, effortless coastal stopover after navigating the scenic mountain passes or the coastal roads from Plakias and Rodakino.
