Preveli Beach & Palm Forest
Located at the exit of the imposing Megalopotamos (or Kourtaliotiko) Gorge, Preveli is arguably the most iconic and photographed beach in southern Crete. This striking location creates a rare, tropical-like landscape where a freshwater river meets the deep blue expanse of the Libyan Sea.

The Landscape:
The beach itself features a blend of fine pebbles and sand, but its defining highlight is the lush forest of Theophrastus palm trees (Phoenix theophrasti) lining the banks of the river. The river flows continuously year-round, forming a cool, emerald lagoon framed by towering canyon walls before spilling onto the shore. Back in the 1970s, this magical oasis was a legendary sanctuary for hippies traveling through Europe and the Mediterranean.

The Experience:
Visitors can swim in the cool, fresh river water under the natural canopy of the palm forest or take a dip in the salty sea just steps away. Exploring the shaded riverbanks on foot offers a serene contrast to the open, sunny beach environment.

Rider’s/Explorer's Notes:
The Access: Accessing the beach requires a short trek. The most common route involves parking at the designated area near the Upper Monastery on the western side, followed by a scenic 15-to-20-minute walk down a stepped stone path with breathtaking coastal views (note that the climb back up can be steep). Alternatively, an easier, flatter approach is available from the eastern side near Ammoudi beach, involving a gentle ~15-minute walk along a marked coastal path.
