Monte Forte (Kato Krya)
Perched atop a rugged hill about two kilometers from the village of Kato Kria in eastern Crete, Monte Forte is a historic Venetian stronghold with panoramic views over the Sitia countryside.

History & Strategic Importance:
Constructed in the early 13th century shortly after the Venetian conquest of Crete, Monte Forte was built as a crucial military stronghold to control key passes and monitor the vast surrounding regions of Lasithi. Over time, the fortress played a significant role in defending against local revolts and pirate raids until it was eventually superseded by coastal fortifications in Sitia and Ierapetra.

Sights & Architecture:
Within the ruined perimeter of the fortress walls stands the charming, whitewashed chapel of Agios Georgios. The site offers visitors an authentic medieval feel surrounded by rugged limestone terrain, wild herbs, and sweeping 360-degree vistas stretching across the olive-covered hills down toward the sea.

Rider’s/Explorer's Notes:
The Access: Reached via secondary asphalt roads from Sitia toward the Krya village region. A winding side route leads toward the hill, followed by a short, scenic walk or hike up to the summit to reach the church and Venetian ruins.
