Fari Festou

Fari Festou, Settlement,
Central Crete

25-07-2026

Fari (Festos)
Nestled in the central plains of the Heraklion prefecture near the municipality of Festos, Fari is a quiet, deserted hamlet that offers a poignant look into the modern depopulation of rural Crete.

History & Abandonment:
Once a small but vibrant agricultural community, Fari slowly dwindled as younger generations moved toward urban centers and larger neighboring agricultural towns like Tymbaki and Mires. The village's history reached a quiet turning point in 1983, when its very last permanent inhabitant left, officially rendering the settlement a ghost town.

Atmosphere & Architecture:
Today, Fari remains frozen in time. A walk along its narrow, overgrown paths reveals traditional stone-built houses with weathered wooden doors, ruined archways, old olive oil equipment, and silent courtyards now completely reclaimed by nature and surrounding olive groves.

Rider’s/Explorer's Notes:
The Access: Easily accessible via secondary paved and narrow agricultural roads branching off near the main routes around Festos and Tymbaki. Its flat lowland terrain makes it an easy side stop for a peaceful, reflective wander through a piece of forgotten Cretan heritage.
