The upper, or back, Monastery of Preveli (piso monastery, of St. John the Theologian) is about 11km from Plakias, at the slopes west of Kourtaliotiko gorge. It is the operational part of the two building complexes which consist the Preveli monastery. The monastery is believed to have been founded in the middle Ages, during the occupation of Crete by the Venetians.
