Monastery of Preveli (Piso Monastiri)
Perched dramatically on the desolate, wind-swept cliffs west of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge—roughly 11 kilometers from Plakias—the Upper or "Back" Monastery (Piso Monastiri) of St. John the Theologian stands high above the Libyan Sea. It is the active spiritual heart of the Preveli monastic complex, which also includes the now-abandoned Lower Monastery (Kato Monastiri) situated further inland.

The History:
The monastery's origins trace back to the Middle Ages, during the Venetian occupation of Crete, likely founded around the late 16th or early 17th century. Over the centuries, Preveli evolved into far more than a place of worship; it became a legendary stronghold of Cretan resistance. Monks played active roles in every struggle against foreign invaders, most famously during the Ottoman occupation and later during World War II, when the monastery served as a vital staging ground and evacuation point for hundreds of Allied soldiers fleeing Nazi forces.

What to See:
The complex features a magnificent two-aisled church (Katholikon) dedicated to St. John the Theologian and St. John the Baptist, framed by stunning stone courtyards that look out over the vast sea. Within the monastery walls lies a rich museum displaying rare icons, sacred vestments, and historical artifacts. Among its most revered treasures is the miraculous Holy Cross of Preveli (Timiios Stavros), framed in gold and silver and embedded with pieces of the True Cross.

The Access: Easily accessible via a fully paved provincial road that sweeps through the southern coastal hills. The drive down toward the monastery offers spectacular panoramic sea views. There is a spacious parking area near the entrance, making it a comfortable stop along the coastal routes.
