Kouroupa Peak
Rising dramatically in southern Rethymno, Kouroupa Peak (Mount Kouroupa) stands at an elevation of nearly 1,000 meters, strategically sandwiched between the imposing vertical walls of Kourtaliotiko Gorge to its east and Kotsifou Gorge to its west.

The Views & Landscape:
Because of its isolated position along the southern mountain ridge, Kouroupa offers phenomenal, unobstructed panoramas. Looking southwest, the peak commands a magnificent view stretching across the entire bay of Plakias, the coastal plains, and the vast expanse of the Libyan Sea. To the north and east, the vista looks out over the surrounding olive valleys and the rugged limestone terrain of central Crete.

The Environment:
The peak is characterized by raw, wind-swept limestone rocks and low alpine vegetation. Thanks to the powerful thermal drafts created by the neighboring gorges, the skies around Kouroupa are frequently frequented by soaring birds of prey, including griffon vultures.

Rider’s/Explorer's Notes:
The Access: Reached via mountain tracks branching off from the roads near Sellia, Asomatos, or Atsipopoulo/Koxare. The upper ascent features wind-exposed, narrow unpaved sections and dirt tracks, making an adventure motorcycle or high-clearance 4x4 vehicle ideal for reaching the higher ridgelines and enjoying the expansive coastal views.
