Plakias Koules
Positioned dramatically on a rocky hill overlooking the coastal plain, the Ottoman fort of Plakias occupies a commanding vantage point controlling the entire bay of Plakias and the surrounding southern coastline.

Strategic History:
Constructed in the late 19th century as part of the broader Ottoman network of regional fortifications (kouledes), this fort was designed to monitor maritime activity in the Libyan Sea and suppress local rebel supply lines. From its elevated perch, the garrison could oversee both the anchorage at Plakias and the key mountain passes leading inland toward Sellia, Lefkogia, and Asomatos.

Architecture & Views:
The rectangular stone structure features defensive walls, loop-holes for rifles, and internal chambers that accommodated the garrison. While the fort now stands in ruins, its walls remain largely intact, offering visitors wide, sweeping panoramas over Plakias Bay, the coastal cliffs, and the open Libyan Sea.

Rider’s/Explorer's Notes:
The Access: Located near the village of Sellia above Plakias. Access is via a narrow asphalt side road followed by a short dirt track leading up the ridge. A short, easy walk from the parking area brings you directly to the fortress ruins.
