Ideon Andron (Cave of Zeus)
Perched at an elevation of 1,535 meters on the steep slopes of Mount Ida (Psiloritis) overlooking the Nida Plateau, Ideon Andron is one of the most sacred and celebrated cave sanctuaries of the ancient Greek world.

Mythological Significance:
According to Greek mythology, this immense cavern was the sanctuary where Rhea hid the infant Zeus to protect him from his titan father, Kronos, who devoured his offspring out of fear of being overthrown. Within the cool depths of the cave, Zeus was nurtured by the nymph Amaltheia on goat's milk and honey, while the mythical Kouretes warriors danced outside, clashing their bronze swords against shields to drown out the infant's cries.

Archaeological Discovery & Cult Worship:
Excavations have revealed that the cave was a major center of cult worship for thousands of years, spanning continuously from the Late Minoan era down through Roman times. Archaeologists uncovered a wealth of extraordinary ancient votive offerings buried within its chambers, including ornate bronze shields, gold jewelry, ivory carvings, weapons, and ceremonial tripods, many of which are now preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.

The Underground Cavern:
The site features a massive, gaping entrance carved naturally into the limestone cliff faces. Inside, visitors descend via a wooden stairway into a central chamber that stays remarkably cool year-round, echoing with ancient myth and atmospheric underground acoustics.

The Access: Located right at the edge of the Nida Plateau, about 24 kilometers from Anogeia. A smooth paved road leads directly to the parking area near the tavern at the base of the hill. From there, a gentle 10-to-15-minute paved walking path winds up the slope to the mouth of the cave.
